Can Small Acts Of Peace Make A Difference?

Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means. - Ronald Reagan

Real change starts within ourselves when we act with purpose, compassion, and love. If you are wondering how a small act of peace can change the world, try to help someone in need and you will realize the significance of your act. Even small acts can have a meaningful and lasting impact.

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on the 21st of September. This day gives us a message to stop all acts that can compromise peace and do everything to restore it. It encourages us to make a conscious effort to work towards a more peaceful world where people can live in harmony regardless of religion, color, ethnicity, or any other social or financial status. If we can practice peace for one day, surely we can do it for another and another until sustainable peace is established.

Here are some examples of small acts which can have a significant impact:

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to help organizations and communities build and allocate resources for peace projects. According to National and Community Service, 1 out of 4 Americans volunteered through an organization and nearly two-thirds helped their neighbors in 2015, showing that working towards peace continues to be a priority for millions of Americans.

You can make small acts of kindness and uplift the lives of thousands through volunteering. A sense of purpose and accomplishment will make you a responsible and happy citizen. Studies suggest that people who actively participate in volunteering activities are happier than those who don't.

Save the environment

While it remains true that massive efforts are required to resolve environmental issues, there are many ways individuals can address environmental problems by adopting a more eco-friendly lifestyle. From planting a tree to building green houses, efforts at an individual level can save the environment. Here are some simple acts that can reduce your impact on the environment:

  • Adopt an energy-efficient approach
  • Use public transportation whenever feasible
  • Conserve water
  • Recycle
  • Use green products
  • Educate yourself and those around you

Be kind

It is rightly said that there is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up. Your happiness largely depends on how kind you are. There are so many ways you can demonstrate kindness and make others happy. For example; refuse to use language that promotes violence and put people down; refuse to tolerate any form of violence; practice thinking the best of people; and most importantly, be kind to yourself. Do everything in your capacity to cultivate peace. Your small act of peace will surely bear fruit.
